Recognition

Spencer completed his eighth grade year this spring.  His school (which has grades 1-8) holds a recognition ceremony for the graduating eighth graders.  It is held in the school's gym which was decorated with a few balloons and streamers.  The speaker system was old, and it was a strain to decipher every word spoken during the speeches given by one teacher, one parent and two students. The highlight was seeing the children dressed up and excited to move onto the next phase in their educational career.  Next year high school starts for all of these kids.  Four years still seems like a long time at their ages, but I know it will go by quickly.  Spencer is excited to be moving on, but is still a bit disappointed that he will not be attending the same high school as most of his friends.  He must be growing up, because he is handling it with more maturity than he has shown in the past.  Spencer's Grandma Sue send him the following the poem to mark the occasion:

The day has arrived,
And it's perfectly clear
Your 8th Grade Graduation
Deserves a big CHEER!!!
The years passed so quickly
From kindergarten 'til now
And the things you've accomplished
One can only say WOW!!!
From soccer to sailing,
To back flips, acting (also singing) in plays,
From archery, Circus, and cooking, oh my,
And outstanding performances for History Days.
But these things are behind you.
Now "ease on down the road"
To bright new beginnings in high school
Always remembering family and friends are there to help ease the load.
Now as "the magic of our powers take you higher"
Stay the kind, loving, young man on whom one can rely
Who always says hello with a smile and a hug
And another when we have to say goodbye.
Take each step in stride;
Face new challenges without fear, 'tis
Just a walk in the park
For you, also know as "The Wiz".
